At times the CNA professionals are employed by the healthcare facilities they had trained in; at other times there are nurse recruitment agencies that provide them support. As a CNA professional there are certain CNA duties and responsibilities that you have to perform every day.
Important CNA Duties and Responsibilities
One of your prime CNA duties is to communicate efficiently with the patients and their relatives. You have to understand what the patient wants and then get it. You are like a body for the patient. Whatever they cannot do, you will have to do it for them. Some CNA professionals act as mental supports for their patients. You have to interact with the family members too. Give them updates about patient’s health condition. CNAs might have to take certain instructions from the family members. CNA duties also extend to taking instructions and providing detailed reports to the doctors. When the doctors arrive you have to answer all questions (related to the patient) with confidence and accuracy.
As a part of CNA training you will have to learn the basics of medicines. Other important lessons such as anatomy, physiology, etc. are also taught as a part of CNA training. When you are attending a patient some basic medication knowledge will have to be showcased (depending on the needs). Generally the doctors prescribe medication; your job is to make sure patients have them at right time. You will have to check temperature and pressure for the patient. At times you will be required to guide the patients in their exercises as well as therapy classes.
Most patients come to a healthcare facility when they are suffering from some serious ailments. Their movement capabilities are largely limited. So, helping the patients with movement and performing their essential activities is also a part of CNA duties. You may have to carry the patient from one department of the healthcare facility to the other either with support or wheelchairs. If the condition of patient is bad then you will have to change their clothes and bathe them. Many patients require help while eating. You may have to give them food in small doses for about sixty minutes or more. Keeping the patients’ rooms clean and hygienic is also a part of CNA duties and responsibilities.
The shifts of a CNA vary according to the needs. You have to account for these in CNA job description. In the present scenario where medical facilities are having a tough time retaining their professionals, you might have to look after many patients at a time. CNAs have to provide a proper report about patients to the supervisors and if there are any vital signs of improvement or worsening.
Though CNAs are often considered a pecuniary part of the healthcare system, but they carry out some important duties which help a patient heal. Negligence is the worst mistake for a CNA professional. There is a lot of scope for you as a CNA to grow. You can appear for the CNA 2 and then nursing exam to climb up healthcare ladder. Remember to include every important details in your CNA resume. CNA duties are not all about money, they are about passion too.
