There might be apprehensions involved in applying for any job, but these are nothing compared to the feelings of utter fear and anxiety that may grip a first-time job seeker. No need to keep feeling that way, though. The key to keeping those unpleasant emotions and thoughts at bay is to do everything you can to prepare yourself for the challenges that lie ahead. Here is how to get first job:

1. Do the Groundwork Even Before Completing Your Degree

This might sound a little extreme, but if you think about it, it should make sense. Remember, a fresh graduate has no experience to speak of. All you might have to show your future employer is your amazing personality, your willingness to work long and hard, and of course, your stellar academic performance. So even before you step foot in the real world, ensure that you do some of the groundwork by maintaining an excellent academic record while still in college.

It also won’t hurt if you engage in some volunteer work or complete an internship in your target field. Granted, this won’t count as work experience in the strictest sense, but it will give you an edge over the other fresh graduates who chose to waste their years in tertiary education doing nothing but partying and chilling.

2. Be Organized about Finding the Right First Job

Since the dawn of the internet, hunting for a job doesn’t really require you to literally go door-to-door in order to find the perfect position at a reputable company. With just a few keystrokes, you can definitely get a lot of leads on vacancies and job postings. However, you need to be organized as it can be quite easy to lose track of which listings you’ve already sent an application for and which job ads you haven’t responded to. You might make the mistake of repeatedly applying for the same job while missing out on the other opportunities if you’re disorganized. You shouldn’t limit your job search to just the World Wide Web, either. Talk to your contacts. Tap into your various networks. Search through traditional media. By exhausting all these resources, you’re bound to find the perfect job opening.

3. Make the Necessary Preparations to Land the Post

Applying for a job requires certain preparations to be made. For starters, you need to create a flawless and professional resume that will highlight the skills, strengths, traits, and qualifications you’ve got that make you right for the job. Since you don’t have any work experience yet, you can include the details of your volunteer work or internship instead. If done right, your resume can increase your chances of being summoned for an interview, which you will also have to prepare for. It is crucial that you think ahead about the interview questions that may be asked and prepare your answers. Enlist the help of a peer, and do a mock interview. It will go a long way towards boosting your ability to deliver smooth, astute, and brilliant responses.

It is important to bear in mind that you may be turned down a few times before you get first job, but don’t let rejection stop you from trying again. Remember, you didn’t spend all those years studying just to quit after a few no’s. Prepare, persist, and you’ll emerge a winner.
