As someone who aspires to the position of teacher assistant or teacher’s aide, you are probably not a fully-qualified teacher. Any qualifications you do have will be listed in your resume, and the purpose of your cover letter, as far as you are concerned, is to make your experience, character, empathy, flexibility, and potential stand out to the point where you cannot possibly be refused an interview.
Mention any past employment as a teacher assistant, including any experience you may have gained while still a student. If you have helped to educate children with special needs, emphasize this part of your background. Most schools will have a percentage of pupils who need extra help in the classroom, and if you can highlight your patience and willingness to assist them, you will probably rise to the top of the candidates’ list.
Pay attention to the details of the position given in the job advertisement, particularly to the age group of your potential pupils. An in-depth knowledge of, or interest in a particular subject would be a plus point for a high school teacher assistant, while an elementary school teacher assistant can go a long way by being able to play a musical instrument or demonstrate skill in crafts. A willingness to participate in organized sports always helps, no matter what the age of the students.
Don’t forget that you are an educator and communicator, which means that your potential employer will expect your cover letter to be a specimen of your good command of the English language. So pay special attention to your grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
